Advent - What Does It Mean?
The meaning of Advent, taken from the American Heritage Dictionary, is described as "the coming or arrival, especially of something momentous, the birth or coming of Christ," and explains that "the four Sundays before Christmas are known as Advent or Advent Season."
We will again prepare for the Advent Season by setting aside an evening for families to make and decorate wreaths to be taken home as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. Think of the memories that can be made as family members light the Advent candles to anticipate the coming birthday of Christ!
An Advent wreath forms an ideal centerpiece with candles to remind us of the Star of Bethlehem, Jesus, the Light of the world. The Advent wreath consists of five candles, four around the circumference of the wreath and one in the center of the wreath. Each candle has a meaning and is lit at a particular time during Advent.
At 4:30 p.m. the Fellowship Hall on campus
will be filled with the smells of evergreens and the sounds of children,
teens and adults as families and individuals prepare their advent
wreaths in creative ways. Materials are available at a reasonable
cost.
At 6:00 p.m. the wreaths are taken to the Auditorium, where
everyone gathers to sing Christmas carols and share Christmas traditions.
